Cuareim Quartet

The Cuareim Quartet is an unusual string quartet, composed of Rodrigo Bauza and Federico Nathan (violins), Olivier Samouillan (viola) and Guillaume Latil (cello), four musicians with different backgrounds who are all composers as well as performers. They play original compositions together, confronting and mixing their experiences acquired in different genres to explore new territories. They are interested in the musical traditions of all continents – including the language of jazz – while cultivating an atypical sound for a string ensemble.

While the focus of the four musicians is on contemporary jazz and improvised music, they eagerly embrace a wide variety of aesthetics and styles. The four musicians play original compositions and arrangements, hoping to break new ground by combining their very different backgrounds and experience in different genres.

It was this open, genre-crossing approach that the quartet brought to FAME’S Institute in October 2022. Together with percussionist Natascha Rogers, they closed the first year of the programme with Danzas, an hour-long cycle of their own music that links world traditions through dance, from flamenco and waltz to samba. Working with four musicians who are composers as well as performers, students saw how classical players can build careers as composers, improvisers and producers. The course included recording sessions in FAME’S Studio and ended with a concert at the National Philharmonic in Skopje.
